Marjorie Fox tells her clients there are three non-negotiables: Contribute enough to a 401(k) to get the employer match, accelerate pay-down on credit card debt so that high finance charges don't drain your resources, and work on building adequate emergency savings.

Jon Yankee, a Certified Financial Planner with Fox, Joss & Yankee, a fee-only financial planning firm in Reston, Va., recommends budgeting in some "fun money" to avoid spending too much when going out.

"Part of our goal has been to establish our firm's reputation so students think of us as the firm to go to,” he said. “When that happens, we'll have a choice of the best students."

Fox, Joss & Yankee primarily recruits at the universities around the country that have the most respected undergraduate and graduate financial planning degree programs. These include Texas Tech, Virginia Tech, Kansas State, University of Georgia, Utah State, and San Diego State.
