Recent Due Diligence

The FJY investment committee performs a number of activities each quarter as part of the due diligence process. We investigate the details of potential and current investments, as well as continuously evaluate our investment philosophy, including asset class selection and the allocation to each the asset class. Committee members attend conferences, conduct meetings with investment managers, and conduct independent research regarding investment philosophy, asset classes, and specific investment vehicles. Due diligence activities in the second and third quarters of 2009 are described below.

June 3-6: Marjorie, Dan, Jon, and Tess attended the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA) National Conference held at National Harbor, MD.

August 27-28: Marjorie, Dan, Jon, Laurie, and Tess attended a Dimensional Fund Advisors (DFA) Introduction Conference. DFA is a fund management company used exclusively for institutional investors and clients of registered financial advisors. (Westin Wellington, a DFA Vice President, spoke to FJY clients in April 2008, discussing the passive investment strategy employed by DFA.)

September: Our Investment Committee conducted extensive research in the area of Treasury Inflation Protected Securities (TIPS), and met with representatives from Blackrock, Legg Mason, American Century, PIMCO, and Morgan Stanley.

September 14-17: The Schwab Impact Conference was held in San Diego, CA, where Jon and Laurie participated as speakers on a panel discussing the development of a financial planning career path for young people.

September 17-18: Marjorie visited the Steben Advisor Forum in Gaithersburg, MD to further her knowledge in the area of managed futures.

October 9-13: Laurie attended the NexGen09 Conference and Financial Planning Association’s (FPA) National Conference in Anaheim, CA. Laurie served on the NexGen task force responsible for planning the NexGen agenda for the conference.

October 26-30: Jon will attend the NAPFA West Conference in Scottsdale, AZ.
