Our Thoughts

TEAM SPOTLIGHT: SUMMER ASSOCIATES

The latest installment in our monthly Q&A session where we sit down with members of the FJY team to find out a little bit more about what exactly they do here and what makes them tick.

This Month: FJY Summer Associates Tony Rieck and Aaron Wall.

Tony is enrolled at Texas Tech where he is pursuing a Master’s in Personal Financial Planning

What made you decide you wanted to pursue a career in financial planning?
I stumbled through quite a few majors while I was pursuing an undergraduate degree. I finally found an intro to financial planning/tax planning course and I fell in love. The professor I had for that class was great and really got me interested in the profession. I want to be able to look back one day and be able to say that I had a positive impact on peoples’ lives. I believe financial planning is a great way to help someone reach their goals and to change a person’s life for the better.

If you were stuck on an island, what three things would you bring?
#1 would have to be my dog. I have had him for more than 5 years and it is safe to say he is my shadow when I am around him. #2 would be unlimited SPF 50+ sunscreen at the very least. I know my tanning limitations. I do not try to play games with the sun. #3 would be cooking equipment. Cooking is how I decompress. I am happy when I can start from scratch and create something that tastes delicious.

What do you most look forward to when you get up in the morning?
When I wake up in the morning I look forward to competing. I tend to be extremely competitive at times. I am competitive with myself mainly. I have a strong drive to do the best that I can at anything I attempt. If you tell me you can do something better than I can, I will more than likely try to prove you wrong.

Aaron comes to us from Salisbury University as a Finance major on the investments and financial planning tracks.

How did you first learn about FJY?
I first learned about FJY at the 2016 FPA Career Day in February. I was able to interview with five different financial planning firms in the DC/MD/VA area and was impressed after my interview with FJY. After further research, it was clear that FJY was an industry leader and would be an amazing place to have an internship.

What’s the best book you’ve ever read?
My favorite book is definitely all the books in the Game of Thrones series. To be completely honest, I haven’t actually read them but I owe them for my favorite TV show!

If you could do another job for one day, what would it be and why?
I really love the idea of teaching. When I first attended college, I wanted to major in education with the intention of teaching social studies to high school age students. I had spent my previous three summers working as a swim coach and thoroughly enjoyed teaching kids of all ages how to swim. However, after discovering information about business, I decided to switch my major to finance. I hope to one day be able to retire and become a teacher!
